The O’Reilly family’s control of Independent News & Media, the Irish company that owns 32 per cent of trans-Tasman media group APN News & Media, is starting to look shaky as the former searches for ways to cut debt and fend off its second-largest shareholder.
According to media reports in Ireland and Britain, IN&M held talks with German newspaper publisher Axel Springer in recent weeks on participating in a rights issue that would have diluted the O’Reilly family’s 28 per cent holding and Irish millionaire Denis O’Brien’s 26 per cent stake.
